The Great TMS Machine Scam: How BrainsWay and Oxford Medical Therapy Took £82,000 and Left Me Worse Than Before

My Story: 40 Years of OCD, One Desperate Decision
Living with a mental health disorder is like carrying an invisible weight that no one else can see. It grinds you down over the years, erodes your confidence, and leaves you desperate for anything that promises relief.
Sadly, there are people and companies that recognize this desperation not as a call for compassion, but as an opportunity to make money. They don't see the human being, they see a transaction.
I've lived with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) for more than 40 years.
It began when I was just 12. Back then, I had no idea what was happening to me. I started having terrifying intrusive thoughts that would take over my mind, hold me hostage, and leave me feeling broken inside.
As I got older, the symptoms only worsened. OCD isn't just about handwashing or checking locks. It's a relentless, cruel mental illness that rewrites how you think and who you are. It made friendships difficult, relationships strained, and everyday tasks exhausting. Even during moments of peace, there was always a voice whispering that something terrible was about to happen.
Over the decades, I tried everything. Nothing ever brought lasting relief. My life became a cycle of fragile hope followed by crushing disappointment.
So when I heard about Deep TMS therapy, something new and supposedly revolutionary, I felt that tiny flicker of hope again. TMS—Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation—is a non-invasive brain therapy that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas responsible for OCD. I had read that it was FDA-approved, backed by clinical trials, and was even helping people who hadn't responded to anything else.
And just like that, after all these years, I let myself believe: Maybe this is it.
That hope would cost me everything.

The Hidden Truth About TMS Side Effects
While manufacturers advertise TMS as "risk-free" or "super-low-risk," many patients report severe, life-altering side effects that were never disclosed to them. Unlike medications that can be stopped, TMS effects cannot be reversed—patients can only wait and hope their brain adapts.
Medical professionals often deny these effects are even possible, leaving victims without support or acknowledgment of their suffering.
Legal Actions Against BrainsWay
Neuronetics vs. BrainsWay Federal Lawsuit (2022)
In May 2022, Neuronetics filed a federal lawsuit in the District of Delaware against BrainsWay Ltd. and BrainsWay USA Inc. for unfair competition under the Lanham Act.
Key Allegations:
- BrainsWay "egregiously misrepresented efficacy data for the treatment of anxious depression" for commercial gain
- Manipulated NeuroStar's effect size by presenting incomplete therapy endpoints
- Compared manipulated results to "inappropriately aggregated data from three disparate studies" to make their device appear superior
- Engaged in misleading marketing practices to deceive psychiatrists and patients
This lawsuit reveals a pattern of deceptive practices designed to mislead healthcare providers and vulnerable patients about treatment effectiveness.
Illegal Sales Practices?
Multiple reports suggest BrainsWay devices are being sold to non-psychiatrists, which may violate FDA regulations. These devices require proper medical supervision and should not be sold for home use.
Financial Exploitation
Victims report being pressured to borrow money from elderly relatives, threatened with legal action when unable to pay, and refused refunds even when treatment caused harm.
